What I thought being a writer would be like vs. what it is.

What I thought being a writer would be like:

  1. A quiet and clean space. Empty desk. Laptop. In my head it would be a converted attic room or a she-shed
  2. Quiet, maybe some classical music in the background.
  3. A general idea of what I am going to write about that day. Being guided by a detailed outline, or some such thing.
  4. A day, or at least half a day to properly dedicate to my craft so I get it all perfect in only a two drafts
  5. You get four GOOD chapters down and leave your desk feeling a sense of achievement.

What it is:

  1. A laptop on the dining room table.
  2. Usually my kids are talking to me or around me, my husband watching TV. The dogs might be barking at the neighbors. The cat also likes to stop by and walk across the keyboard.
  3. Sometimes I have a scene I want to get down, other times…..no.
  4. I have sit down to write for as little as ten minutes. Never…ever have I had half to a whole day to dedicate. This is thus far a fantasy.
  5. If i get down four chapters in one sitting, not only was my typing really on point that day, but they are probably really short chapters and will need a lot of editing.

But you know what……….no matter which way I get it done, it gets done. I have three books to prove it.
